Objective

The objective of the clinical guide is to provide regional EMS students with the necessary information on completing their clinical hours at the hospital. This book provides specific information on preparing a student for their clinical hours.

Clinical scheduling will be through the Blue Ridge EMS Council (BREMS). No walk-ins are allowed even if there is an opening in the schedule.

Please email us through our contact form to schedule a clinical time. Provide three (3) acceptable dates and times. Your request will be processed within 24 hours.

Clinical time that is not scheduled through BREMS will not be counted as your hours in the Emergency Department (ED).

Students must email at least 48 hours in advance to schedule ED time.

Students must contact BREMS upon cancellation of clinical time by calling 434-947-5934.

Students should ensure they have completed the appropriate health screening forms and obtained the proper documentation from their instructor prior to scheduling a clinical rotation.

Rules for Students

Dress

  • Dress in appropriate clothing with a name tag. All shirts must have a collar or be a dress shirt. Slacks must be khaki or Docker style.
  • You may wear your agency uniform as long as it has a collar If you wear your uniform, you must wear your uniform boots.
  • No scrubs or hospital lab coats allowed.
  • No tee-shirts, jeans, dirty or torn sneakers.
  • Your instructor will provide you with an approved LGH name tag.
  • Your name tag must be worn to identify you as a student.
  • Any student who is inappropriately dressed or behaves in an unacceptable manner will be asked to leave the hospital.

Reporting

  • Report to the charge nurse upon arrival in the ED, even if you know your preceptor. She/He must be made aware that you are there.
  • Each student must have their personal identification as well as their assigned badge from their instructor.
  • Each student will be assigned to a preceptor prior to arrival at the ED. If for some reason your preceptor is not at work (sick, etc.) then report to the charge nurse for reassignment.

Behavior

  • The student must recognize and respect the patient’s rights and privacy involving privileged medical information. Strict confidentiality must be maintained.
  • Visiting other areas of the hospital while on duty is not permitted. You must remain in your assigned area and only go to other areas if you are assisting in the transfer of a patient.

Emergency Department Clinical Objectives

Goal for Clinical Objective

To provide as many hands-on experiences as possible for students. This experience is gained under direct supervision and guidance of a nurse or doctor.

  • Observe dynamics of the Emergency Department. Become familiar with layout of the department.
  • Rotate through the following areas: triage, substation/chest pain center, urgent care plus, emergency mental health and acute care.
  • Develop rapport with patients to whom you are providing care.
  • Recognize your weaknesses with interviewing and focus on improving them.
  • If applicable, assist with airway management procedures.
  • If applicable, initiate intravenous (IV) access.
  • Administration of medications by various routes, oral, intramuscular (IM) injections, subcutaneous (SQ) injections, and intravenous (IV) push medications. The student may give any medicine the nurse is comfortable with him or her giving. Emphasis is on techniques of administration not pharmacology of each drug given.
  • Assist staff in trauma and cardiac rooms.
  • If patient is in cardiac arrest, assist by performing chest compressions, helping with airway management and giving IV medications
  • Assist nurses in any capacity needed.
  • Observe and practice sterile techniques (setting up suture trays, central line trays and chest tube trays.)

  • Document all procedures done under supervision of preceptor.
